Walter Phillips Gallery, in conjunction with The Banff Centre Music & Sound department, has produced high-quality recordings of each of the 12 Stockhausen Tierkreis music boxes. These recordings are available to the public as an intimate exhibition experience through an iPod Touch app accessible at the Walter Phillips Gallery front desk during open hours.

It is in the spirit of translating through and across technologies that the Tierkreis music boxes by Stockhausen were originally conceived. The newly developed iPod Touch app aims to make accessible to the gallery’s audience a comparable spatial experience, which is a critical element of the tactility of the original boxes. This exhibition, intended to be close and personal, allows for moments of quiet contemplation, deep listening, and reveals the intricate, delicate workings of the traditional music box machinery.

The intimacy of scale of this presentation implies a sense of reflection and interiority, resonating with the origin dream of Musik im Bauch, where music was drawn out from within the body.
