David Rokeby is an interactive sound and video installation artist based in Toronto, Canada. He has been creating interactive installations since 1982. His works explore time, perception, intelligence - both human and “artificial” - and the relationships between humans and interactive machines. One of his interactive systems, Very Nervous System, is being used in a variety of rehabilitation centres for music therapy, communications systems and experimental treatment of Parkinson’s disease. It is also used by composers, video artists, choreographers, and interactive installation artists around the world. Rokeby’s work has been performed and exhibited in shows across Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia, including Alien Intelligence (Helsinki) in 2000, the Biennale di Firenze in 1996, the Kwangju Biennale in 1995, the Mediale (Hamburg) in 1993, Ars Electronica (Linz) in 1991 and the Venice Biennale in 1986. He was awarded the first British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for Interactive Arts in 2000, the Prix Ars Electronica Award of Distinction for Interactive Art in 1997 (with Paul Garrin) and 1991, and the first Petro-Canada Award for Media Arts in 1988.
