Peter Oliva was born in Eugene, Oregon, and grew up in Italy and western Canada. Now based in Calgary, his first novel, Drowning in Darkness (Cormorant 1993), was highly acclaimed and won the Writers Guild of Alberta Henry Kreisel Award for Best First Book and was shortlisted for an F. G. Bressani Prize. Oliva's 1999 novel, The City of Yes (McClelland & Stewart), won the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, the F. G.
