Jack Hodgins

Raised in a rural community in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, Jack Hodgins graduated with a B.Ed from the University of British Columbia and taught high school in Nanaimo between 1961 and 1981. After two years as a Visiting Professor at the University of Ottawa he began teaching at the University of Victoria. He occasionally conducts fiction-writing workshops, including an annual September workshop in Mallorca, Spain. In 1995 the University of BC awarded him an honorary D.Litt. In 1998, he was given an honorary D.Litt by Malaspina University-College. In 1999 he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada. He has just received a third honorary degree. His novels and story collections have won the Governor General’s Award, the Gibson’s First Novel Award, the Eaton’s B.C. Book Award, the Commonwealth Literature Prize (regional), the Canada-Australia Prize, the Drummer General's Award, and the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. Hodgins and his wife, Dianne, have three adult children — in Boston, Vancouver, and Victoria — and three grandchildren.
