Nunavut Animation Lab

The Nunavut Animation Lab was originally conceived as a partnership between the Government of Nunavut and the National Film Board of Canada to bring a new medium for expression to the rich storytelling tradition of Canada’s Inuit people. Now in its pilot year, this partnership has expanded to include the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, the Aboriginal Peoples’ Television Network, The National Screen Institute, and The Banff New Media Institute. Intensive introductory animation workshops were held in Iqaluit, Pangnirtung and Cape Dorset, Nunavut in January 2007 and four animators were selected from this group to progress to the next stage of production.

After spending a week in Winnipeg at the National Screen Institute refining their storyboards and scripts, Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, Ame Papatsie, Gyu Oh and Jonathan J.K. Wright traveled to Banff to spend four months producing their own short animated films. While at The Banff Centre, participants trained under the mentorship of staff from the National Film Board of Canada as well as from the Banff New Media Institute and Creative Electronic Environment departments, and became a vibrant part of The Banff Centre’s artistic community.
